Sharing Is Caring, So Don’t Be Stingy America The American dream is the ideal that every citizen of the United States can have an equal opportunity to achieve success by prospering through hard work, determination, and initiative. This concept has become an iconic part of American culture, and has led many immigrants to seek refuge under Lady Liberty. Therefore, living the American Dream can be obtained by anyone, regardless of race, gender, social status, or economic wealth, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case in the twenty first century, as society has made the American Dream exclude the majority of citizens, and immigrants. History tells us that America is a country of immigrants, and the American Dream is the reason. According†¦show more content†¦The media has targeted the Mexican population in particular for these crimes, due to large amount of Mexicans seeking refuge from their harsh government. Now that America is an established country and largely populated, jobs are more competitive and should be given to Americans, not illegal immigrants. As a result, Mexican immigrants have been denied access to fair treatment, and denied the American Dream. Additionally, current social beliefs state that you must have a certain level of higher education to gain success and prosper in life. As a rich country with millions of poor people, America prides itself on being the land of opportunity for its citizens, and immigrants around the world. However, in a country with supposably a great deal of opportunity, a child’s prospects are more dependent on the income and education of his or her parents rather than being equal to everyone else; unless a person knows the right people, they won’t get very far. As many people know the saying, â€Å"You are who you know.† Joseph Stiglitz from The Washington Monthly calls this, â€Å"politics of envy.† Joseph Stiglitz goes deeper into the social and political aspects of America in his work, by highlighting those that discuss the class issues rather than ignoring it. â€Å"Those who strive not to think about this issue suggest that this is just about the â€Å"politics of envy.†Ã¢â‚¬  Meaning, those who discuss the issue are accused of fomenting class warfare.
